The technology revolution has reduced the cost and risk of companies expanding into new territories that previously were only possible for larger corporations with significant financial assets. As the processing power of machines and communications increase companies can move work to organizations that offer significant cost reductions and they may be based anywhere in the world requiring only a reliable communications network to access the internet. This has led to the growth of regional economic power houses such as Brazil, India and China increasing the standards of living for the local population and the emergence of local corporations equivalent to those most commonly known within the G-8 group of nations.

Operational challenges of working beyond traditional boundaries

As work becomes easier to distribute globally through mergers, acquisitions and alliances taking shape across borders, new operational challenges emerge that can include different business practices and processes, some which may be efficient or culturally accepted by one but seen as inefficient by the other. For example, a simple doctors visit in the UK is a very different process to that in the US or India. Project Managers must now communicate with global teams that may cross cultures, timezones and local HR rules that need to be factored into the project plan.

Where's your project status report?

Making Project Status Reporting less painful

Do you hate producing project status reports? I certainly did. My boss insisted that his team get them in by noon every Friday or like a hawk he'd be at your desk within minutes requesting when it would be done. As a project manager back then, much of my time was spent on conference calls and meetings that took up most of the day. Like most of you, I'm sure, I also had my own deliverables to produce with countless piles of documents that needed my 'urgent' review. So, whats changed after 15 years?

An increase in accountability and visibility of work

As organizations strive to become more competitive within a global market the need to reduce cost, increase efficiencies and ultimately improve margins leads to the increasing need to do more with less. As companies find new ways to consolidate business processes, they may downsize certain functions and transfer the work offshore reducing costs further, but now introducing the challenge of sharing knowledge or expertise to those that need it.
